RESIQUETTE – 3 ways to improve your resume

1. Email address. No crazy or even slightly uncomfortable email address.

I’m often shocked when I read a new grads resume or a physicians CV and I see things like; beachbumDD@, richie69@, or ang_fishyface@free mail.com… Most recruiters have seen this… I usually don’t say anything unless it clearly childish. If its somewhat cute or funny you might score a point depending on who you are talking with but if its professional position and there is competitive which is almost a guarantee then keep your private life private and opt for the less flashy ex. biomajor_creighton or jeremy_chase123@”insert free email”. Its hard enough to land the position, be funny or cute if the interview calls for it. Remember your information will likely be passed around the organization. You certainly don’t want any preconceived notions.

2. Key Accomplishments. Highlight your best accomplishments shortly after you make an introduction or your contact info(who you are).

Yes, an introduction… Your name, address, email and phone then boom! Take your pick with a statement that defines your objective or dig right into what separates you from your peer group. Call it Key Accomplishments or Major Accomplishments…doesn’t matter, what matters is the content. Why are you profitable, how do you make an impact, even if you don’t have a lot of experience you can still be valuable based on your willingness to learn or your attitude towards learning as an example.

3. Most recent experience first.

You would probably be surprised how often I get a physician or even a surgeon..masters, PhD, CPA.. You name it. People with a lot of letter behind their name. Often because in years past it was often proper to list your education and then chronological starting from college. Unfortunately that is Dad’s word. We need to know what is relevant…and now! HR, myself, and the hiring manager are not as interested in your brief stint or years as a server in college or your post college career selling magazines for the summer. Give us the goods in the Accomplishments section then recently best experience. If you resume is approaching 3 pages or more its probably too much. Clean it up… or have a separate attachments for your accolades, presentations, and special training.

Thats it for today-

Andy
